This study describes how public knowledge of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Padang Sarai Village is included in one of the red zone areas. The problems in this research are; 1) What is the knowledge of the community in Padang Sarai Village about the earthquake and tsunami disaster, 2) How do the people in Padang Sarai Village who live in the disaster-prone area choose to adapt, 3) Why do people still choose to live in the area. This type of research is a case study using a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are carried out by means of observation, free and in-depth interviews, literature study, and documentation. The technique of selecting informants using purposive sampling technique consisting of 4 key informants and 5 regular informants. The results of this study indicate that people’s knowledge of the earthquake and tsunami disasters varies. There are people who explain earthquakes and tsunamis theoretically and others explain that the earthquake and tsunami occurred as a result of human behavior itself. This community knowledge creates different behaviors in an effort to save themselves, and the knowledge possessed by the community also makes the community reasons why they still choose to live in areas prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Keywords: Knowledge, Earthquake, Tsunami, Adaptation
