The Relationship of Self Efficacy with Junior High School Student Preparedness in the Red Zone of the Coastal Earthquake and Tsunami of Padang City in 2019

Abstract

Research Objectives Students are a group vulnerable to the risk of disasters that occur in schools, so that student preparedness is very important in early efforts to prevent and mitigate disasters. Based on the initial survey it was found that there were some students who had low preparedness in facing earthquakes. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and the preparedness of junior high school students in the coastal red zone of the earthquake and tsunami in Padang City in 2019. Method This type of research is an analytic survey with a cross sectional design. This research was started in December 2018 until July 2019 at junior high schools located on the coast of Padang City. The study population was 1,906 students and the total sample size was 100 respondents and the sampling technique was Multi Stage Random Sampling. Data collection was carried out through interviews using a questionnaire. Bivariate analysis using Chi-square test and multivariate analysis using multinomial logistic regression. Results Most of the respondents had low preparedness, namely 22%, medium preparedness 44% and high preparedness 34%. Self-efficacy (p = 0.000) and experience (p = 0.017), disaster training (p = 0.014), had a significant relationship with preparedness, while infrastructure (p = 0.127) had no significant relationship with preparedness. The results of multivariate analysis show that self-efficacy and disaster training have an effect on preparedness, while experience, and facilities and infrastructure are confounding. Conclusion Self-efficacy, experience and training on disasters are factors related to preparedness and it is highly hoped that the Education Office will be able to cooperate with BPBD to be able to expand its reach in providing disaster education and training.
